Band Bios

Stan Budzynski

Slide guitar has a natural vocal quality that has always fascinated me.   I approach my guitar solos melodically, the way a vocalist sings.   Overplaying is like trying to talk too fast, or shout in a crowded room -  no one can hear what you are really saying unless you choose words  carefully, and in just the right amount with the right inflection.    I’ll kick up a notch when I need to, though…..”-Stan

Ron Bretz

Bassist and vocalist  Ron Bretz began his musical career in his hometown of Detroit. His  band, The Bouys, played at the legendary Grande Ballroom and opened for  MC5, Bob Seger, Ted Nugent’s Amboy Dukes, and Frigid Pink. As much as he  loved playing music, Ron had second thoughts about pursuing a career in  music. After seeing a T-shirt that read, “Real musicians have day  jobs”, Ron decided to go to law school. Throughout his career as a  public defender and law professor, he never stopped playing music.

In 1998, Ron joined Stan and drummer Dan Mead to form 3rd  Degree. That relationship has turned into the most rewarding period of  his musical life. Together, Ron and Stan have played at clubs and blues  festivals throughout Michigan and in Memphis, Tennessee. While he loves  the blues, Ron is heavily influenced by the music of the 60’s and 70’s  and brings his love of strong melodies and harmonies to the band. Ron  has also contributed original songs based on his skewed sense of humor  or on stories inspired by some of his public defender clients.

Catherine Groll

Catherine Groll grew up in  the New Mexico desert howling at the moon and dancing in drum circles.  She sang in church choir, high school musicals and garage bands until  she moved to Michigan and discovered Midwestern style Chicago blues ,  which were a perfect match for her smoky vocals and gritty delivery.    Catherine considers  the blues her life soundtrack, and her voice is a  distinctive blend of great blues divas like Francine Reed, Bonnie Raitt,  and Susan Tedeschi.

Rick Alicea

 Richard “ Bear” Alicea

Rick started his music career at the age of 14 playing drums for a local  Mexican Band. While he enjoyed the experience, he was drawn to the  music of the seventies in particular Carlos Santana and his band who  influences can still be felt in Ricks music today, Rick has never wanted  to feel boxed into any one genre of music and has had the opportunity  to learn and play with some of area's finest Blues,Jazz, Country and Urban  Bands, Rick singing is as  heartfelt and  soulful as his drumming. Rick has had the opportunity to play around the US  including Las Vegas, San Diego, Pittsburgh  and Washington DC. When not  playing music he spends time with his grandson whom he hopes will  follow suit.

Roger Little

Roger Little is a veteran of all things keyboard.Piano, organ & accordion  are all at  his command.Cajun ,blues & roots americana styles weave seemlessly thru his playing.
